Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th of April, 1972. Scott was raised as an only daughter by her grandmother. Scott was a graduate of her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Then she enrolled in Temple University. Between two work as a teacher, she was studying secondary education. She was hoping to become the high school's English teacher. After 3 years of working as an aide to the teacher and a student, her dream to become a high school English teacher came to a halt. A poet by trade, she began performing at live poetry recitals. Then she joined together with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to create a group. You Got Me, their collaborative song was written by the duo. The singer was at a Roots concert. After that, she got collaborations which included Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. Additionally, she was able to experience the performing arts during the Broadway tour across Canada's musical Rent. She was signed to Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
